Windows 10 Free Upgrade

Should I Take Advantage of the Free Upgrade Now?

Microsoft has announced that it will provide a free upgrade to Windows 10 for all currently licensed Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers. This free upgrade offer will be available for 12 months following the initial release on July 29, 2015.

Should I upgrade right away? Generally, no. As with any new operating system, we don’t recommend upgrading immediately after the first release. Inevitably, additional bugs and issues will be detected after the initial release and they will be corrected with updates and patches within the first few months. We also don’t believe the performance improvements will compelling enough to upgrade immediately. We recommend that you map out a plan to upgrade your workstations in a smart and strategic way to get the most benefit from the new features while minimizing potential negative impact to your operations.

What are the benefits of upgrading to Windows 10? Based on Beta testing of Windows 10 at our office, we believe that many users will appreciate some of the new features. The most notable addition will be the return of the Start Menu, particularly for regular desktop and non-touchscreen users. The full screen Start Screen in Windows 8 never made sense with a conventional mouse and keyboard and Microsoft finally fixed this with Windows 10. Microsoft also claims performance improvements with the new operating system, but it is probably only true when comparing to Windows 7. We don’t think there is any noticeable performance improvement with Windows 10 over Windows 8. In addition to the Start Menu, there are several other new features with Windows 10 which we plan to describe in our next regular monthly newsletter.
